To enable participants to be effective and dynamic leaders for evolving positive work culture in an organisation, Top Rankers, management consultants, had recently organised a workshop on ''building positive work culture for organisation excellence''.
One of the main speaker in the workshop was Escorts HR head Prakash Narayan Shukla. Education Times talked to Shukla, according to whom, HR is emerging as an important function for organisations to survive and it is next to impossible for a business to flourish without HR functions, which is why good HR personnel are in demand.
About HR
HR is a set of functions, which deals with the employees of the organisation and varying dimensions of their existence in the system.
I see HR dealing with three relations to triumph a common goal.
First, an employee works in his individual capacity; second, he shares a boss and subordinate relationship; and third, he works as a member of an organisational group. Challenge for HR and its management is how to align all these functions to achieve the target.
Realism is growing that HR is a critical area and will soon be considered as the backbone of an organisation. Unlike earlier, now personnel want to work together in a team to achieve goals. Indian companies are now seeking those having some f experience in the field.
Differences between Indian and Western HR practices
Hiring and firing system is common in west, for western countries are task-centric ones. While in India the system is quiet pathetic. Apart from cultural differences, socio-economic legal system accounts for a lot of difference in HR practices of India and countries overseas.
Qualities that an HR personnel must possess
HR officials in some of literatures are referred as partners in business. However, to attain that level of being a partner in organisation, he needs to have basic levels of sensitivity and respect for an individual., He must know the business of the company thoroughly and should have a capacity to build a highly productive work force. His conceptual skills need to be of a high order. He should be a highly successful manager with a willingness to innovate and experiment.
The qualifications required
Doing an MBA course is essential as all MBA courses have an HR component. But an aspirant must be innovative enough, for he might become a prisoner of his education, instead of using it as a ladder to go up.
The structured education seems to be a problem as this way aspirants do not think beyond a limit. The fact is, that no curriculum can anticipate future, but is designed keeping in mind experiences of the past.
